also i’m too lazy to c/p but for real @ your 2nd comment, like, it’s seriously the epitome of everything i hate most about fictional het. brash asshole dude and vulnerable woman he must protect. it’s even worse than most bc casca is theoretically a badass, but she’s always conveniently depowered so guts can swoop in and protect her. and that’s not even mentioning yk the sexual assault. like they are both so diminished as characters when they’re interacting as love interests, it’s the worst.

When guts invites casca to go with him he doesnt have a dream yet at that point, he was just chillin at godo’s the whole year training, when he invites casca to go with him, he invites her to the journey of searching a purpose to live. They could search for that dream… together.. at least that’s what i think

in the tradition of everyone telling you about music and berserk the mountain goats whole album transcendental youth has many gutscore songs on it? see “amy aka spent gladiator” and “spent gladiator 2” theyre perfect pre the band of the hawk and post eclipse guts, respectively.

i’ve listened to a lot of their individual songs but never an album, ty i’ll have to sit down and check it out! And I did just listen to the two songs you mentioned and omg yeah they are extremely painfully Guts.

it’s just not framed as a tense bad vibey moment w/ an evil dude manipulating a bunch of poor innocent people so he can get a kingdom, it’s framed as ‘lol fuck you noble assholes, griffith’s back and this time he’s getting his utopia, high five’

like do other people basically read a scene like this with sinister horror movie music playing in the background?

i mean i completely get if (general) you can’t ignore the eclipse rape in your perception of the story, but i feel like if you can’t do that, then your berserk is fundamentally at odds with miura’s berserk, since he has diligently ignored it throughout the entirety of neogriffith’s narrative, without a single fuck given for the kind of awkward tonal pall it casts over everything.

While I agree that leaving behind the Hawks/his family in pursuit of proving his “worthiness” was misguided, I’m hesitant to call it a “mistake.” Living (and dying) as an accessory solely for the benefit of someone else isn’t particularly good or healthy.

I’d agree if Guts’ life with the Hawks was ever framed as “living and dying as an accessory solely for the benefit of someone else,” but it isn’t.

Which is Griffith’s answer when Guts asks why Griffith risked his life to save him.

Basically Griffith denying any emotional investment in Guts by emphasizing his role as a military leader who sends people to their deaths regularly.

Guts calls him out on basically lying here three years later, in the post-Zodd conversation.

So yeah, while this is nice foreshadowing for the Eclipse, it’s explicitly not how Griffith actually feels wrt Guts, and Guts figures that out.

Guts was never just an accessory to Griffith’s dream, and there was a point where Guts knew that perfectly well, before the overheard Promrose Hall speech fucked it all up lol.

And just to add a few more things:

even if Griffith really did see Guts as just another soldier who could help him achieve his dream, I don’t think it would necessarily be unhealthy for Guts to stay with the Hawks. Being a mercenary is a line of work, and being a mercenary with the Hawks is a line of work with much greater rewards, much greater camraderie and friendship, and a greater sense of purpose than being a mercenary with any other band. Guts comments early on about how the Hawks are different than any other mercenary band he’s fought with because they’re happier, because they have a personal stake in Griffith’s dream.

Guts doesn’t particularly care about being raised into the peerage, or even about the idea of Griffith becoming a King beyond thinking Griffith is “absolutely incredible” for having such a lofty dream and actually getting close to achieving it, but he does care about his friends, and during the three years in which he presumably felt like he was mainly just doing a job, he was happier than he’s ever been before or since.

So imo it would still be the case that Guts would find greater personal fulfillment in a mercenary band full of happy people who love him as a friend and respect him as a leader, rather than wandering around alone crossing swords with anyone who looks strong – specifically, it’s implied in a flashback during the Wyald fight, monsters like Zodd:

Again, it’s another little piece of sad irony, knowing how Guts spent two years after the Eclipse.

And lol I know this response is getting long, sorry, but w/e I love talking about this shit so one more last little thing:

Griffith also doesn’t see any of the Hawks as just accessories to his dream, let alone Guts. He cares about the Hawks more than probably any other mercenary leader.
I mean this is a dude who prostituted himself to a pedophile to prevent
as many deaths in the line of duty as possible, and self-harmed in a
river while monologuing about how he has to win for the sake of the men
who’ve died for his dream.

He represses the hell out of his guilt and emotional attachment to them, because they die a lot and if he didn’t he’d be a wreck, but the very fact that he could offer them up as sacrifices means they were all extremely important to him:

By mentioning Tokyo Babylon and X(/1999) in the same sentence, I can’t help but think that anon is referring at least partially to Subaru/Seishirou, which…how to explain it…in TB, it’s an age gap “romance” (16/25): young boy develops feelings for older man, older man is, shall we say, not the greatest person who ever lived…by the start of X, they’re both adults (not in a relationship) who stand on opposing sides of an issue (w/ complicated feelings unaddressed)
So I guess they’ve got the
friends/lovers/enemies flip-flopping that might bring up the comparison,
but I personally place them in a different kind of problematic bracket
than Guts and Griffith (though I don’t ship SeiSub so I could be
biased). They could also be thinking of Kamui/Fuuma from X/1999 who are
roughly the same age and whose relationship hits some similar beats…I do
like both TB and X though, although X is unfinished

ty for the additional info! idk if I’d ever get into this myself, but it’s good to know if I ever do. Seisub def doesn’t sound like my thing but the other ship you mentioned might be kind of intriguing.

tbh, as i was reading the manga, i thought that guts developed complex and complicated feelings for both of them (which involve romantic love, certainly). i don’t think that casca was somehow a “replacement” for an unavailable griffith. moreover, i think casca herself was guilty of trying to understand and get to griffith through guts, not really the other way around.

That’s fair but honestly I actually do rly think that, while it’s probably an accident of Miura shoving a ton of repressed feelings into the love triangle in just about every direction, and/or maybe just a side effect of the fact that Guts and Griffith are still the central relationship in the story and most other relationships in Berserk serve as support for it in some way, Guts’ feelings towards Casca do come across as redirected feelings for Griffith to me. Not so much Guts using Casca to try to get to Griffith or understand him, but more a sublimation of his subconscious feelings for someone he perceives as unavailable (for reasons that include both the stupid speech and the fact that he’s a dude) to someone who is available.

Like ik that sounds like a giant stretch so I can argue for my otp lol, and I mean yeah I’m ngl I’m biased, but eg here’s my favourite observation I’ve made about it, specifically about their sexual encounter, and it feels like a genuinely solid reading to me.

I also have a much longer thing on the same topic here that covers a lot more ground but like, that’s five thousand words lol so I’m just adding it for posterity’s sake, not actually telling you to read it (or the other post for that matter, I just linked them for curiosity’s sake, and bc I’ve already said p much everything I can think of to say about Guts and Casca and their feelings for Griffith in those posts so I’m being lazy lol)

(…Homura Akemi from pmmm deserves to be namedropped) In any case, have you ever seen Legend of the Galactic Heroes? None of the pairings match the griffguts dynamic imo, but it’s a very interesting series in its own right and one character, Reinhard, has a few things in common with Griffith (though they’re not even close to being identical, to be fair). Sorry if you mentioned your opinions on LOGH already somewhere in the archive.

I’ve only vaguely heard of it, though I have seen that Griffith comparison once or twice. Looking it up really quick tells me that it actually does look like something I’d probably enjoy. It seems worth adding to my list of things I should check out next time I’m bored and in the mood for more involved than youtube cooking channels to watch lol, ty!

Evengelion is pretty interesting as a piece about mental illness and trauma/warfare that’s been written by an author who was depressed at the time he wrote it- as I greatly suspect Berserk is as well.

oh yeah i mean i’ve definitely argued that berserk is about trauma. i’ll chalk this up as another potential similarity, cool.

im pretty sure kaworu is slightly drawn from ryos character! he appears in one episode in the of series and has spawned. so. many. copies in future anime like every other eva character.

conjure in our minds. kaworu is an “angel” which is evangelions
definition of the antithesis of humanity; he loves and accepts shinji

love/relationship was always doomed from the start. in the finale of the
episode he appears in (spoiler) he convinces shinji to kill him. and
thats it.

watch evangelion for the women/girls and the woman in the machine allegory robots essentially

lmaoo i think theres a ton of religious themes and christian imagery a
la devilman and the subconscious of humanity being evil in berserk = the
human instrumentality project in evangelion but the context is
different…. in the beginning of berserk were shown hell as a swirling
vortex of souls that are all without ego and inseparable from one
another; in evangelion humanitys collectivization of souls as end game
situation is presented favorably…

oh also the literal
quote from the end of evangelion “this fated destruction will lead to a
joyous rebirth” gives me berserk vibes.

wow yeah it does sound like, relevant to fans of berserk and devilman for sure

WHITE haired dude i will not stand for this erasure. no jk but yeah that’s pretty much it. it’s just that the dynamic between kaworu and shinji is very different from, for example, guts and griffith’s dynamic so i’m struggling to see the similarity beyond hair colour and idk like shit happening on a cosmic scale or w/e

oh yeah fair enough. i never got into it bc i heard kaworu is only in it briefly so it didn’t seem worth it to me lol. i remember seeing kaworu on a ‘characters who caused the apocalypse bc they’re gay’ list also including ryo and griffith (and some madoka character idk) and like, that is completely not the case in either devilman or berserk so ngl it wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of the other comparisons are pretty shallow or not applicable.

I’m not a native english speaker, so please sorry if i wrote smth wrong.
There is one fic but it’s in russian. It’s short, gen and actually just humor fic. Guts had bet with Griff that he would learn how to read. And he goes to their band chaplain and convince him to teach him by some porn book which Griff gave him.
There are some good berserk fics in russian, and at least three good griffguts fics.

That sounds cute lol, but damn, monolingualism strikes again 😦 google translate just isn’t the same. Oh well, I’m happy for you and other Russian speakers who can enjoy them, and there are a few good fics in English too so I shouldn’t complain lol. I just always wish there were more.

Ohh, I see. I think I dealt with a similar issue with docs and tumblr’s formatting.

yeah. plus tumblr formatting is super glitchy lol with the automatic double spacing that just occasionally stops working for no reason, eg. like there are tricks to fix it but lol @ tumblr in general

Does it not let you copy + paste images to tumblr? I know you cant on mobile but on desktop it usually lets me?

what i just do is copypaste panels into a tumblr post directly from paint lol, bc that’s the level of my literacy w/ graphics. i can copy them into a tumblr post and i can copy them into google docs, but if i copy a post from docs to tumblr (or from a tumblr draft to docs for that matter, tho it works w/ a posted post) only the text c/ps, the images get left behind.

tbh it’s not like a huge inconvenience or anything, just mildly annoying lol
