i seriously can’t wrap my mind around the concept of a writer spending about 70 chapters establishing the intense emotional connection between guts and griffith, showing us that griffith’s feelings for guts are even more powerful than his ridiculously epic dream, and then bringing griffith back as an antagonist while hinting that his feelings are still there in some form, the feelings that drove the plot of a huge important narrative arc that is basically the character foundation for everything that comes after…

only for those feelings to actually be fake now and coincidentally just the feelings of a fetus he absorbed one time.

like why would anyone want to either write or read that lmao

yea the lack of emotional reassurance through like any sort of intimacy is it since it was the little moments alone with guts that really keep griff going i guess
on a tangent this is why modern au is good bc guts actually knows that

yeah like imagine if the toucing + emotionally intimate armour scene wasn’t immediately followed by wyald showing up and ruining everyone’s morale. or if a kiss had taken place at any point, i mean it would’ve completely kicked fate’s ass i’m 100% confident in that.

griff should’ve handed him a romance novel instead of the kama sutra t b q h. he played himself he was too bold when he should’ve lead in with some romance tropes.

i wonder if this is an actually intentional parallel (the suicide and “saving” at least) meant to contrast guts relationship w the two orrrr if its just another coincidence im reading into too much

i’m ngl i was planning out a casca-as-a-narrative-and-emotional-replacement-for-griffith essay when i thought of this and was wondering that too. i mean it’s two suicide attempts by main characters in front of guts in really quick succession. whether it’s meant to mean that guts should’ve dicked him down to save his friends idk but it does fit in with griffith feeling like guts is slipping further away and not getting the reassurance he needed that he isn’t.

yk like if it’s not a literal parallel/contrast it could still work as an emotional one.

he mentions it in like. some like “interview with a mangaka!!” piece. its on a manga viewing site somewhere and is like in comic form and written by someone who i guess does it as a series but he mightve mentioned it in that intervoew from 2004 that i think a lot of ppl have read by now (the one where he compares himself to the green ranger, etc)

god i always forget about the sword in mouth thing?? like miura is obviously pushing phallic imagery and traditional allegories/metaphors with manhood and swords, and its pretty directly foreshadowed that griff getting his sword broken –> figurative and probably literal castration; broken swords obviously symbol loss of power but its a p common art motif to symbolize impotency too lol

The first thing that springs to mind to say about it is that I literally, 100% being honest and not exaggerating, cannot conceive of a writer writing that into their story and intending the characters to be straight bffs lmao

Like it’s the scene where they properly meet for the first time, and it’s not even innuendo, it’s straight up “are you gay? do you want to fuck me? okay sure if you win you can” and Griffith pointedly denying none of it. If that’s how you choose to introduce your characters’ relationship I just don’t believe that all the subsequent homoeroticism is accidental.

Also a good thing about those exchanges? Prime the audience to read the first duel as a sex scene. Like I’m sorry but Guts saying “you can have whatever you want, my sword or my ass” and then surprising Griffith by um taking his sword into his mouth? Pretty dang suggestive.

(Also Griffith winning by seizing Guts’ arm in a hold and then dislocating it = he’s a power bottom. Sorry that’s just basic literary analysis.)

More seriously I think it’s interesting and simultaneously kind of heartwarming and tragic that the first thing Guts does is project his rape trauma on Griffith but then quickly comes to wholly trust, admire and love him. It’s another indication that living with the Hawks and Griff for 3 years has really helped heal him emotionally, and another relatively minor thing that adds a little more weight to the Eclipse, at least in theory (seems a bit thin to say it was purposeful on Miura’s part but it works).

sooo yeah i could definitely see it. plus from a characterization standpoint his whole thing is emotional repression. Also turns out Berserk gets even more depressing when you look at it from that angle, even if it is totally unintentional.

I totally agree. Idk I guess I’d err on the side of thinking that Griffith would probably never be entirely comfortable with being praised for his appearance but he wouldn’t necessarily have flashbacks either? So I’d say his reaction would be somewhere in between total acceptance and imminent breakdown. But if it was like a fic or smthn i could easily be convinced either way.

Hugging headcanon 

He’s always the one hugging someone to comfort them, never the one needing comfort. So he’ll hug Casca after she thinks he’s dead to reassure her, but he’ll twist out of her arms when she’s trying to comfort him in the river.

But deep down, somewhere he won’t admit to himself, he really, really wants to be wrapped in Guts’ big arms. Like letting Guts hold him and letting himself feel comforted would be one of the highest relationship achievements to unlock.

Post-torture, when Guts did get to hug him and hold him a few times, Griffith would’ve pushed him away if he could and a tiny part of him was glad he couldn’t.

Sex headcanon

Because I think it fits him on a meta-level, I think if Griff has sex-related trauma it’s more about feeling objectified and used rather than say sexual position. So he’d switch but wants to be the one in control regardless. With Guts he’d definitely lean towards power bottoming, and he’d lavish praise on Guts, talk about how gorgeous he is, etc. Guts wants to be looked-at and Griffith wants to do the looking so I think they’d be rly compatible from the start. But I also think it’s kind of a burden to him to always feel the need to be in control so there’s another related high-level relationship achievement to unlock in some happily ever after au.

Also doing this one for NeoGriff because I feel like there’s a significant change:

NeoGriff otoh would have sex solely to please his partner. What with the whole “the desired” thing, he would just become whatever his partner wanted him to be, because the only reason he’d be having sex anyway is to further his goal. So Charlotte gets this ready-made fantasy object who doesn’t give a fuck but is really good at pretending to, and so does anyone else he might ever end up getting laid by, for whatever goal-related reason. He’s still in control no matter what he’s doing what with being a god and all, but it’s all dictated by the other’s desires.

Other than Guts who is still the eternal exception.

General physical contact headcanon

Guts’ rare casual touches make his heart skip several beats and get warm and fuzzy. like look at this look right after:

in the future…. lionesses do most of the work in the pride + hunt and
protect the weak yet still have to “submit” to lions so the pride stays
in order which is why i like it so much for her… also lionesses are bffs
with other lionesses (womenfolk)

omg please draw this I need to see it. And yessss as an animal motif that’s perfect for her. especially since the other 2 animals (hawk and dog) also encapsulate both positive and negative (soaring high vs cold predator, loyalty and need for affection vs like, wildness), so strength vs submissiveness and maybe an arc to overcome it makes so much sense to me. (also guts’ fingers on griffith’s lips omgggg)
