I’m pretty sure there’s nothing that ever indicates he can read, and I def headcanon him as illiterate. Like, unless Griffith gave him lessons I don’t see where he would’ve learned.
On the other hand we’ve seen Casca reading and she didn’t have much more opportunity for formal education than Guts. And there’s no indication of where back alley peasant kid Griffith learned to read and write either. So who knows?
I need art of Guts trying his best
A quick and seedy sketch of Golden Age Guts struggling to understand what’s going on in that book.
vol 2 of the berserk fanzine is on preorder right now until the 25th! (primarily sold through p/os, if you want it you should grab it now) i got to illustrate a fantastic essay about farnese written by robyn noe. our collab is about four pages long. i was on vol 1 too & the organizers of this zine + everyone in it is really talented and kind. it’s also more magazine-based than vol 1, smth very refreshing that i think helps the word “fanzine” return to its roots. it’s also quite lengthy at nearly 50 pages and very well-made. please check it out if you get the chance!!!
