how do u think griff and guts get together during the therapy au (if they do?)

tbh I don’t really have any solid detailed ideas here. I can say that if I was reading it I’d want this au to still have a misunderstanding and stupid “breakup” and I think my preference would be for Griffith to downward spiral somehow (not like a torture chamber, but idk risky behaviour, stupid decisions, dropping out of uni, that kinda thing) after Guts leaves to find himself, and for them to get together after Guts comes back and finds him miserable and self destructive. Like, re-do the Golden Age but fate isn’t a thing and gods aren’t a thing and Griffith still has a tongue so Guts has his revelation that he shouldn’t’ve left and instead of summoning gods they figure their shit out and then make out.

Also I’m gonna tag @yesgabsstuff and @mastermistressofdesire and also if anyone else wants to get in on this plz do bc frankly I am not creative enough to contribute much to entertaining au ideas lol. My style is like, ok well here’s what happened in canon so let’s do the exact same thing but slightly different bc of circumstances.

I’m probably the only person that hates Charlotte not because of Griffith has non to do with him, but she didn’t even ask him how he can talk, etc. Then I think about it is either Griffith or being locked up, also why hasn’t she been bothered with falconia when is midland originally?? I hope her royalty ass gets concerned for her kingdom at least since Griffith isn’t going to be nice once he marries her.

Well tbh I have my issues with how Charlotte is written since I think she’s too passive and two dimensional at the moment (though I have hope for her in the future bc there’s plenty of room for her to grow and she has shown some depth before, eg spearheading the plot to rescue Griffith) but I think these points in particular are a little unfair.

When the first thing your boyfriend does when he shows up again after 2 years is fly you out of a tower with the help of a cool monster idk if I’d think to question his recovery either. It’s even possible she asked off-screen, but not important for the reader to see because imo it’s pretty easy to assume that “magic” is a reasonable explanation when this is a dude who performs miracles.

And as for Charlotte ruling her kingdom, I mean, this is fantasy middle ages in Berserk, aka a world hardly known for granting women a lot of power. I don’t think Charlotte was ever expected to actually take control of a kingdom – she was supposed to get married to someone who would do that. And from her point of view she’s marrying the literal saviour of the world, declared divine by the highest religious authority, regular performer of miracles, who magically created the best damn kingdom the world’s ever seen. I don’t think she’d feel the need to vy for control when by all accounts Griffith is doing a bang up job.

Like idk she’s boring to me too, but her choices and reactions all make sense to me since she’s a sheltered princess without a lot of life experience, so I can’t really direct any ire at her. I just wish she was written to be a little more dynamic I guess, and I can totally see why her passivity would grate on you. Here’s hoping she does something interesting in the future.

Oh and lastly I don’t think there’s any reason to believe Griffith wouldn’t continue being blandly nice after marrying her. Why do you think that would change?

tbh the more epic and fucked up a canon is the more charming i find chill modern aus, so i think my faves are aus where they’re basically normal. a little fucked up and weird and dramatic maybe, but like, when guts and griffith have a dramatic break up no one turns into a demon, they just downward spiral like ordinary people do and spend a while hating each other and making things awkward for their mutual friends.

also i think in a modern au guts should still have some kind of thing he does. if not swinging a sword then maybe a trade his shitty adopted father taught him, or a hobby he spends most of his downtime on (working out, sports, idk).

Also tradesman Casca – maybe she’s a welder or carpenter or mechanic or something. Sry I love her buff arms too much not to give her a physical job, and the class issues are important to the story so they’re all blue collar.

Idk what I can say that hasn’t been thoroughly explored in the story. Hmmm okay he gets angry because he’s a ‘doer’ and it’s an emotion that leads directly to action. Sorrow, fear, trauma, regret, loneliness, emotional need, etc, all ends up being expressed as anger so he can use it as fuel for monster slaying and feel like he’s accomplishing something. That’s practically canon but w/e.

Soft spot headcanon

Kids. It might not seem like it when he tells a 12 yr old to kill herself but man, few things make him feel worse about himself than hurting children. Why he let zombie girl stab him in the 2nd chapter, why he kept fucking up while fighting Rosine, etc.

Well I’m gonna fill in the blank with Relationship with NeoGriffith. And a headcanon for that is that Guts is not going to be able to kill him. Like emotionally, even if he somehow found a way to physically. Dude can’t even think the words to himself lol. Though what I can see is Guts pseudo-accidentally killing him if they were on a physically level playing field. A la Gambino – subconsciously thinking he’ll avoid the strike easily and then feeling horrified when his sword goes through him. Though of course what kind of emotional shit must be wreaking havok on NeoGriff for him to fail to avoid a strike like that is another story.

Hmm that was more half-assed speculation than headcanon but w/e, close enough.

Anger headcanon – Jill

Jill, being inspired by Guts but deciding to stay in her shitty town for whatever reason, channels her anger at all the awful people she’s surrounded by into teaching herself the sword. Maybe finds someone less terrible to teach her the stuff she can’t learn herself. When Griffith breaks the world half her town gets eaten and she takes off to become an adventurer.

Soft spot headcanon – Zodd

He has a soft spot for anyone who manages to survive more than 5 minutes against him. Especially Guts who he practically has a crush on and won’t let anyone else kill unless he absolutely has to.

Dancing headcanon – Theresia

hmmm okay – Theresia is out now, seeing the world for the first time, fueled by rage and revenge, but not so consumed by it that she can’t feel the wonder of experiencing the world properly finally after only seeing it from her window. She’s wandering from place to place learning to fight from anyone who will teach her something. One day she finds herself in a small town during some spring festival. There’s dancing in the streets, and she gets pulled into it. She doesn’t know how to dance but she has a great time moving from partner to partner and just going with it and letting loose for an afternoon. Afterwards it’s one of her fondest memories.

Omg okay I just thought of this bc of you putting the words Slan and Anger together, but hey what if the thing that turned her into a member of the Godhand wasn’t sex-related like we all assume from the fact that her tits are out in Berserk?

I’m not gonna build a whole narrative here but hell maybe she was an epic, prideful queen or something who lost a war, and decided to sacrifice all her loyal beloved subjects and become a god rather than accept her loss. Also for added camp drama the kingdom she lost to’s queen is her ex girlfriend. She was the main sacrifice. Now there’s a headcanon you can hang your hat on.

Relationship with NeoGriffith headcanon – Locus

Locus takes the noble knight thing waaaay too seriously. Also while the rest of the apostles are all in love with Griffith by default, Locus would be in love with him anyway. He’s got this whole loyal devoted knight/sexy king thing built up in his head.

Dude looks like… that… because of a) how he was tortured (the hooks and stuff) and b) bc he’s a sage (nerd) and really wants to emphasize his brain over his looks. Superlong scarecrow skeleton arms are so he can pull his cloak out to the sides and flap it like wings and fly away.

NICE. Okay her first kiss with Charlotte is initiated by Charlotte after she sobs in Anna’s arms about how she’s pretty sure her husband is a soul-less void and also gay af. Charlotte reaches out tentatively, says, “you’ll always love me, right?” and kisses her.

Anna spends about 2 seconds going ‘holy shit holy shit holy shit’ and then loses all decorum, takes control of the kiss, carries her to the bed, and immediately undertakes the job of making Charlotte forget all about her demon husband, with rousing success.

Driving headcanon

lmao THE WORST. Never get into a car with his man. He will scream at everyone, he will honk obnoxiously during traffic jams, he will tailgate, he will pass on a solid yellow line, he considers going the speed limit a form of losing.

He has the best bass voice. He doesn’t sing often but get a few drinks into him and everyone shuts up to listen to him.

This is how she wants to comfort and be comforted. Casca is a huggy person, she will hug you without thinking if it looks like you need it. To get Farnesca for a sec Farnese loves nothing more than being wrapped in Casca’s strong comforting arms in a vulnerable moment.

Farnese would give Serpico a birthday gift on the anniversary of her finding him in the snow. She never asked when his actual birthday was.

Cooking headcanon

Serpico didn’t learn to cook until Farnese was sent to the monastery and he went with her. As punishment for some infraction (maybe something Farnese did and he took the blame for) he got assigned cooking duty, and found out he was good at it and enjoyed it.

Sleeping headcanon

Has a recurring nightmare about being burned alive, often by Farnese, sometimes by himself or his mother.

Driving headcanon

The best driver. He’s the guy you want to get in a car with – totally cool, chill, zen about traffic, lets people in, accelerates gently, always signals, doesn’t break the speed limit unless everyone else on the highway is, etc. Unless Farnese is in the passenger seat, because when she tells him to pass a slow driver on the shoulder of a four-lane highway or they’re totally going to be late for her appointment, he’ll do it.

Bathing/showering headcanon

The thing he likes least about traveling with Guts and co, other than the imminent danger aspect, is the lack of opportunities to bathe. I feel like personal hygiene is v important to him.

Pretty much only hugs Farnese. Like if there was a crying child in front of him he’d only try to comfort him or her if no one else was available to do it instead. He’s a caretaker but not the most emotionally nuturing.

Okay I think he’s had plenty of unemotional hook ups with men in the past. Sure he was around a bunch of terrifying religious people, but we know the whole burning people alive thing was to keep the lower classes terrorized, so nobles weren’t really in danger. So he wasn’t too worried about being called a heretic for getting laid.

Also I think he’d want to be more submissive in bed than he’d actually allow himself. He’d feel like submitting to someone else was a kind of betrayal of Farnese, in a weird way. He’d still let the other dude have the upper hand during sex though.

Too repressed to get outwardly angry. Even when shit gets real and he brings the sword out and tries to kill Guts, he’s chill about it and only shows some intensity in his eyes. I can pretty much only see him losing it if Farnese ever got killed.

Other than Farnese? I think he actually has a soft spot for Guts, despite trying to kill him and considering him a danger. He respects him quite a bit, decides to put faith in his will power instead of trying to kill him again, and there’s that one moment during Ganeshka’s lightning storm where he leaps over to try to save Guts and Guts is like, ‘tf are you doing? you know there’s nothing you can do to help me so go do something useful.’ Little bit of irrational protectiveness coming out there. Then getting between him and Zodd. He probably has a bit of a crush.

Probably the cloak and feather duster. I keep thinking of and then dismissing ways to say this. Like, it’s not that he wants to be special, or that they allow him to be useful, or that he wants to be part of something bigger than himself… it’s more like they symbolize he subtle ways he’s changing himself and becoming a better person – or at least a person he likes more?

Calling this favourite memory and tbh this is a tough one. Probably wouldn’t be anything pre-Guts. But anything post-Guts is also tinged with sadness because he’s on the outside looking in at Farnese, especially her more heartwarming and happy moments, a lot now. She’s mostly a top (and dom with the right parnter) but can switch. She can let loose and get rough but it’s very partner dependant – the thing she most wants to do is make her partner melt into a puddle of pleasure. She wouldn’t start having sex until after she learned a few lessons about being considerate and taking joy and pride in helping others (yk bc she’s still a virgin in canon afaik) and I’m js that would def help make her a gr8 top and/or dom. Her sadistic urges haven’t gone away entirely but I’d say they’re mitigated by care for the other person and rather than solely getting off on like burning someone or flogging someone she could definitely get off on making the other person feel overwhelming pleasure.

The masochism seemed like a manifestation of guilt and shame to me so now that she’s more comfortable with herself that’s probably neither here nor there.

She was indifferent to it when she lived among nobles and had like chests full of it, though I imagine she had a few pieces given to her by her mother and father that she treasured more than the rest.

When she ran away to pursue Guts she occasionally found herself missing the luxury and finery. But when she returned to the Vandimion estate for those two days or so when she was arranging for a ship, she realized how heavy it weighed on her and missed the lightness of the men’s clothes she’d been wearing.

I think he’d be a passively receptive kisser for the most part. I hc him as gay and I think he’d go for that type of dude Miura likes to write as side characters – yk like Roderick and Luca’s soldier bf who i s2g he tried hitting on – the kind of good-hearted trustworthy action-oriented type who knows what they want, and Serpico would go with whatever flow and rhythm they set.

If Griff won without killing Guts or permanently maiming him I think the tragedy would be subtle and quiet but there.

Guts would give up his attempt to be Griffith’s equal. I think on one level he’d actually still be glad that Griffith fought to keep him, but he would stop thinking of himself as a potential friend and equal, and start thinking of himself as truly lesser. Consequently he would grow distant. He might feel restless and stuck since now he’s made the choice to leave the Band once and been unable to. At any rate, he and Griffith would absolutely lose their camraderie.

Guts would no longer be the person who treats Griffith irreverently, disobeys orders, has waterfights, etc. Griffith would be up on a pedestal now, totally unreachable, and that would be reflected in Guts’ attitude towards him. He’d still admire him (though he’d probably still feel some resentment too), but he’d treat him like a leader and figurehead, not a person anymore.

Good ending: Griffith eventually breaks, does stuff like… idk starts pushing Guts’ boundaries, gives him more commands that keep him close (promotion to bodyguard?), tries to force conversation etc, eventually Guts feels backed into a corner and they have a confrontation and finally manage to talk and grow.
OR Griffith does something stupid and irrational for him again and Guts finally manages to have an uninterrupted conversation with him about it.

Bad ending: Griffith lets the distance grow, resigns himself to it, throws himself into political machinations, loses touch with the Band in general now that he’s among nobility, maintains only a working relationship with his former Hawk commanders, gets everything he thought he wanted and ends up miserable without knowing why.

If Griffith just killed Guts then I think, if I had to settle on one outcome, he’d suppress his emotions harder than he’s ever suppressed anything before, continue on like normal, grow distant from the Band who would probably be pretty disturbed by this reaction, marry Charlotte, and one day have a complete breakdown.

I’m kind of into the idea of Griffith achieving his dream at a cost he can’t bear ngl.

Casca/Farnese is the main one tbh, I genuinely think based on their feelings now, when Casca comes back properly (assuming Bad Shit doesn’t happen which is a huge impossible assumption but still) they could easily transition into a tentative, positive relationship. lbr right now Farnese is the only person who’s earned Casca’s trust and affection, and helping Casca has helped Farnese grow as a person so it would feel fitting if Casca continued helping Farnese grow except maybe by like, teaching her the sword or something once she doesn’t need a babysitter. Also this which is too damn real.

Also I semi-seriously ship a lot of minor characters.

  • Jill/Rosine because duh. Also they have some teenage f/f version of guts/griff vibes.
  • Charlotte/Anna bc lbr here Anna is the only person who genuinely loves her
  • Jill/Theresia by virtue of being two kids with close relationships to apostles that Guts hung out with and traumatized, they have a lot they could bond over
  • Schierke/Sonia bc they’re the same and clearly mutually crushing based on their one afternoon together and also another solid potential Guts/Griff parallel
  • @jyuanka suggested Serpico/Silat to me once and I hopped completely on board because Serpico desperately needs a boyfriend and I feel like his chill go-with-the-flow thing would actually really complement Silat’s prideful obsessiveness, plus they’re both like, intelligent and practical and cautious about things and idk I just think they’d click.

now if we’re talking sexy encounters and one night stands rather than actual relationship potential i want to add:

  • slan/farnese. slan taunting farnese about her sadistic tendencies. farnese driving her silver dagger into her and slan calling it foreplay. okay honestly slan/any woman ever. honestly, slan. give me the lesbian fanservice miura.

Do you have any other favorite manga/anime other than Berserk?

Yk aside from Cowboy Bebop and Death Note (and Berserk ofc) most of the other anime and manga I’ve gotten into has been really really recent (like, since Yuri On Ice lol) so I’m not much of a connoiseur and my knowledge of what’s out there is v limited. So here, have p much everything lol.

I’m partway thru and rly enjoying: Tiger and Bunny, Utena, Michiko & Hatchin, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (manga)

Seen or read and enjoyed: Devilman (and a few of the spinoffs/sequels, but couldn’t get thru Devilman Lady for obvious reasons), Yuri on Ice, Samurai Flamenco, Petshop of Horrors, Doukyuusei, Gunjou

p much i’ve been looking for stuff that’s gay or gayish, about adults, and with art that doesn’t put me off (ie not overly cutesy i guess), and some of those points are negotiable.

Favorite and least favorite things about berserk?

favourite:

tbh I have to go with the tragedy of Guts and Griffith’s relationship throughout the Golden Age. I genuinely love so much about Berserk, after the Golden Age too, and the other characters, but honestly that arc is the best, most personally appealing tragedy I’ve ever read. Like ‘dude who’s got his life planned out perfectly and then falls in love with another dude and fucks it all up’ is my absolute favourite plot already, but then add Griffith’s guilt issues, his total divorce from his own emotions, the misunderstanding that’s built up so well on a strong foundation of character, Guts’ own complex issues, the way it’s a tragedy built on miscommunication that actually works and doesn’t feel cheap, etc.

But most of all I love how well Guts and Griffith suit and complement each other before everything goes to hell. Reading the Golden Age is like watching 2 dudes walking together down a road full of turns and forks, and there’s a hundred possible paths they could take that lead to happy destinations, but they keep choosing the turns that lead to the pit full of tigers. And you know exactly why they choose the paths they choose, it makes perfect sense based on what you know about them, which just makes the inevitable tragic end that much better. There is nothing I find more entertaining in fiction than watching characters make mistakes and understanding perfectly why they’re making those mistakes.

Like “I sacrifice” is an emotional climax so satisfying that it makes me want a cigarette.

least favourite:

the rampant misogyny tbh, among all the other shit that offends me. But if I had to pick one more specific thing as my least favourite, it would be the way Casca is sexually assaulted multiple times because Guts and Griffith want to fuck each other but can’t bc the writer won’t let them so they both assault her instead while staring directly at/thinking about how they want to be closer to the other. There are other aspects of Berserk that I’d say are more offensive, but this particular one wins because it’s so integral to the characters, the relationships between them, and the plot in general that you can’t just go ‘welp that was awful’ and then pretend it didn’t happen.

What do you think of the way miura handles schierke’s crush on guts? Cause tbh it really creeps me out how the manga seems to take it seriously. Also that scene when schierkes taking a bath/naked and falls on sleeping guts is so…ewww . No wonder there are actual pedos in this fandom 😷

I pretty much hate it all around lol. I don’t think her crush is taken that seriously – Schierke takes it seriously but the narrative mostly plays it for laughs or mild sympathy – but it really irritates me how every female character in Berserk has a crush on Guts, it’s unnecessary and it just plain sucks.

Plus yeah I totally agree that it gets creepy af a few times. Like, I avoid this topic because I don’t want to get into a conversation about the epidemic of normalized pedo pandering in manga and anime and how Berserk plays into it bc I’m just not equipped for it. But I’ll just say that I can think of a few creepy pages in the manga, like the one you mentioned, that are up there at the top of the giant pile of things I hate about Berserk.

honestly im the same i dont have a specific dream finale because i just cant see where the story is going. all i really want is griffith and guts relationship to have an emotional resolution and maybe for them to die together bc im a sucker for my otps doing that and being codependent as hell (imagine them stabbing each other in the chest with their lips only a few breaths apart or guts stabbing griffith while griffith cradles guts head like he did during their first duel tho…fuck)

YES I’m a sucker for this kind of soulmatey hero/villain tragedy that leads to them dying together, I’d love that.

Also I want to see both their swords added to the Hill of Swords. I would cry and it would be beautiful and cathartic.

everytime i try to imagine an ending for berserk i cant come up with anything solid because miura completely subverted the good/evil trope. like you got an antag whos actually the messiah and acting out god and humanitys will/desires while the protag isnt fighting for any greater good but merely for revenge. if guts ends up killing griffith then what the hell happens? does god die too and the wheel of fate get broken? what would exactly constituite a satisfactory ending for this story to you?

Same, this is a real problem for me because I like trying to predict things, but I just can’t with Berserk lol.

I feel like he could swing an ending where somehow the Idea of Evil/Fate in general is like… defeated by humanity, who, thanks to whatever, would now rather struggle in an uncaring universe than blame all their problems on God. But I feel like that’s kind of unlikely because, idk, it just feels a little too big of a metaphysical change and too positive of a take on humanity for Berserk.

Honestly for me if Griffith does something irrational because he (not the damn fetus that’s a red herring as far as I’m concerned) still feels those pesky life-ruining emotions for Guts, and in turn Guts demonstrates his mixed-feelings towards Griffith in a powerful way, I’ll consider myself satisfied. Basically I’m thinking a 3rd duel (assuming Guts’ brand of sacrifice, which removes him a little from fate according to Skull Knight, means he can potentially hurt Griffith) where emotions are at their peak.

I’ve also vaguely considered an ending where Guts lets Griffith stab him, because he has a bad habit of doing that when he’s feeling conflicted about killing someone, or when he’s confronted with something that makes him feel guilty (in this case, the memories of human Griffith and their first two duels). In this scenario Griffith would be shocked because he expected Guts to block or w/e a la that time Casca stabbed him, and maybe have a breakdown beside his corpse.

I have a whole long speculative post here too but I can’t commit myself to one perfect ending lol, there’s so many possibilities. At the end of the day I just want that heavy emotional GutsGriff drama.

do you ever think about how griffith and guts haven’t interacted or even seen each other in like 19 volumes except in the last case for that moment before guts and co sailed to elfhelm and get super sad but also marvel at how the ship is still going strong canon-wise

God I know right? Like they’ve been separated for 20 real world years, aside from one brief meeting and that one meeting-each-other’s-eyes-from-across-a-distance moment and Guts has spent a large chunk of that time trying to forget him, but GriffGuts still feels hugely relevant.

I guess because the readers know they have to meet again (I mean could you imagine the story fizzling out with Guts deciding to retire in Elfhelm while Griffith rules the world lmao? No GriffGuts reunion, no epic climax) and we keep getting these occasional hints from the story that they’re nowhere near finished with each other emotionally, even as their current narratives have nothing to do with each other.

Guts has his temporarily chained inner beast still haunting him and threatening to take over and hunt Griffith down, and every few volumes the subject of Griffith comes back up to make him feel things and periodically remind the reader that it’s not over (the RPG group gossiping about the old Band of the Hawk, Laban asking
after him, meeting apostles and knowing Griff is nearby, witches in
Elfhelm asking after him, etc)

And on Griffith’s end we have that beating heart, and imo every volume of Griffith narrative we get where that’s conspicuously not brought up again and yet implied by the pointed ambiguity of Griffith’s emotional state (gorgeous portrait at the end of Sonia’s chapter on loneliness, serenity contrasting with transformed Ganeshka’s panicked loneliness, letting Rickert slap him, the question of who sent Raksas after him, etc), is just more tension added that will make the moment we do get to learn about Griffith’s emotions extra satisfying.

tbh structurally the way Miura showed Griffith’s pov as his heart was unfreezing, and then for every subsequent part of Griffith’s narrative gave us absolutely no information on his internal emotional state, and human Griffith’s downfall (and the thing that kept being brought up over and over and over and over again during the Golden Age) was his irrationality caused by his feelings for Guts – it just makes me intrinsically feel that we’re heading for something big. It’s a tease for a reason.

What do you think of the fact guts and casca originally weren’t supposed to be together (and as such casca wasn’t supposed to be important to the story) and miura only did it to make the eclipse more dramatic for guts? Imo it really speaks of the sexist nature of miura’s writing (i know he got better recently but still) and g*tsca.

Strong agree. Like I’ve said a few times that if Casca wakes up and does something really important plot-wise in reaction to her trauma that has to happen at this point in the story it would at least help a little to justify Casca’s 20 year long non-existence, but Miura’s comments make it so clear to me that he had no real long game for her in mind, and it wouldn’t change that fact. Like, like Guts, he shoved her into a cave for two years to keep her out of the way until he needed a damsel in distress and then a handy reason for Guts to try conquering his rage.

She really is like a walking plot device and it seems so obvious that it’s entirely because he didn’t know how to include her as a character in the plot so he just got rid of her character for a while in a really shitty way.

When it comes to G*tsca like… I mean technically I guess I prefer the tentative, two people giving something a shot vibe to say, a planned out epic romance, but the fact that it was just to give Guts more manpain is so, so gross. On the one hand at least there’s a silver lining there in the fact that Miura did not plan G*tsca as a true love happy ending thing from the start, which hopefully makes it less likely to happen, but on the other hand if it does turn into a romance again, then extra ew.

Especially since like, if he’s making it up as he goes along, the idea of Miura writing their “relationship” the way he did throughout the last 3 arcs and then deciding romance is the way to go from there is… horrifying lmao.

But whatever I’m clinging to “your wishes may not be her wishes” like a life raft rn.

so i’ve seen a lot of people theorize that void sacrificed skull knight to become god hand which may explain why skull knight seem to have it with him in particular/why void appeared as a god hand right after gaiseric’s reign fell. well then since you can only sacrifice someone that you love so much they’re like half of your soul + considering there seem to be some parallels with guts and griffith here does this mean that void/skull knight is #real
