Since we didn’t witness any instance where Griffith eats, I conclude that he is an plant otherworldly being sustaining himself on solar energy. 

Evidence that Griffith is in fact a plant extraterrestrial:

• We never really see him drink water, but we do see him splashing himself with water. Is that like… watering plants hmmmm???

• There is a drink in his hand but it’s full and the party is in full swing, further proof he doesn’t function like a regular human

• And reading about human achievements and science, more like… getting acquainted with the human culture hmmm???
